Background of the Study
Property inheritance-related deaths often emerge from disputes that may involve foul play, where forensic anthropology plays a pivotal role in establishing cause of death and identifying victims. In Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State, forensic anthropological methods such as skeletal analysis, trauma evaluation, and DNA profiling are applied to resolve ambiguous cases where inheritance disputes are implicated (Adeniran, 2023). The use of these techniques has led to significant improvements in forensic accuracy, enabling investigators to distinguish between natural deaths and those arising from violent circumstances (Opeyemi, 2024). Despite these advancements, challenges remain due to inconsistent evidence collection, cultural barriers, and legal ambiguities surrounding inheritance disputes (Babatunde, 2025). This study critically examines the impact of forensic anthropology in resolving such cases, assessing its strengths and limitations, and proposing strategies for improving the investigative process.
Statement of the Problem
In Ibadan North, property inheritance-related deaths are often complicated by unclear forensic evidence and disputes over victim identity (Babatunde, 2025). Inadequate forensic protocols and resource constraints frequently result in incomplete investigations, impeding the resolution of inheritance disputes and delaying justice. The ambiguity in establishing cause of death undermines legal proceedings and complicates property claims. This study seeks to identify the deficiencies in current forensic practices and recommend methodological improvements to enhance evidence reliability and judicial outcomes in such contentious cases (Adeniran, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the role of forensic anthropology in investigating inheritance-related deaths.
To identify challenges affecting forensic evidence reliability in these cases.
To recommend strategies to improve forensic protocols in property inheritance disputes.
Research Questions:
How effective are forensic anthropological methods in solving inheritance-related deaths?
What challenges hinder accurate forensic analysis in these cases?
What improvements can optimize forensic investigations in inheritance disputes?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Advanced forensic techniques significantly enhance the determination of cause of death.
H2: Inconsistent evidence collection negatively affects case resolution.
H3: Standardized protocols improve the reliability of forensic findings in inheritance disputes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it informs forensic and legal practices by evaluating the role of forensic anthropology in property inheritance-related deaths. Its findings will enhance investigative protocols and support judicial processes, ultimately ensuring fair resolution of inheritance disputes and improved evidentiary standards (Opeyemi, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to forensic anthropological methods applied in investigating property inheritance-related deaths in Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State. It does not address other types of inheritance disputes.
Definitions of Terms:
Inheritance-Related Deaths: Fatalities occurring in the context of property disputes.
Forensic Evidence: Scientifically analyzed data used to support legal cases.
Forensic Anthropology: The discipline that applies anthropological methods in legal investigations.
